Flying high with Presteigne Charter

Red Bull Air Race
Red Bull Air Race

Millions of people worldwide have enjoyed the 2008 Red Bull Air Race World Series. Beginning in Abu Dhabi and covering cities such as Detroit, London and Perth, the racing tour is taken all over the globe with 12 pilots navigating a low level aerial race track flying sometimes as low as two metres over water at over 230 mph. Weaving though a course of 30ft air filled pylons in the quickest possible time, the races are a visual delight thanks to the stunning backdrops of the venues.

The coverage is not only enjoyed by people at home, but huge screens provide a heightened experience for the thousands of people who are there to watch the race live.

For the third year running, Presteigne Charter have been involved not only by supplying a full de rig HD fly away to the production company Si Vision, but are the only company to be providing HD radio cameras for the coverage at the races.

Being such a large event can cause challenges. Up to seven Gigawave HD radio cameras are used at each event and having so much kit in such a tight area means there is no room for underperforming equipment. The system has proved itself in the heat and dust of Abu Dhabi to the rain of Rotterdam, the computerised control of the receiver system has proved a huge time saving device for both set up and sorting out any issues during the three days they are on air.

The Quad diversity capability presented plenty of options for area coverage and with the added ASI combiner we continually improve the coverage further. For the Detroit race, Presteigne Charter had full coverage around the race tower and over the water for the boat cameras and then added a fifth receive sight at a helicopter landing area over a mile away, offering a seamless link between the two as the camera followed the race winners through the streets in the back of a open car.

Presteigne Charter delivered a solution for both fixed large lens cameras which would be impossible to get fibre cable to and roaming HD radio cameras, of which up to five are used at the main arena. Using LDK 6000 camera heads and our own racking back design, the package has full racking control, stereo audio and has almost eliminated outer cabling around the camera, meaning that it offers not only a fantastic multi HD radio camera solution, but it looks the part as well!
